Overview
The Global Service Jam is a community of Jams taking place internationally over the same weekend. All the Jams share the same starting themes, and publish their local results over a central platform. The theme for participants in the Global Service Jam will be announced at 5:00PM (local time) on the Friday, and results must be shared by 3:00pm (local time) on the Sunday. There are a few rules for participants, one of which is to come without a team and ready to collaborate with new people!
Highlights
Problem we were trying to solve
- Frustration of packing prior to a vacation
- Inconvenience of bringing luggage onto a plane (lines at check-in, extra baggage fees, line at baggage claim, the risk of the airline losing your suitcase)
Contributions I made
- Lots of ideas and sketches at initial brainstorming phase, using "Yes and..." to build others' ideas
- Suggesting tools and techniques to facilitate faster decision making
- Journey mapping, personas, user flow, value props
- I got us unstuck by coming up with the final direction of the service (using lockers at the airport and the benefits of doing such)
- Presentation and public speaking
- UI screens, copywriting, and acting in the final deliverable
Key Takeaways
- Iterate! And frequent checkins (having someone else glance over your work) prevents you from over-committing to an idea that won't work
- Refining ideas over refining pixels.
- Show, don't tell (focus on prototype, not presentation)
- Think of service design as a long-term relationship (and how it will evolve over time), not a 1st date
- Working on a team with people I quickly start to consider friends leads to better ideas and quicker turnaround than maintaining a strict professional relationship with them
- Bodystorming is a) fun and b) helps empathize with the user -their thoughts and feelings- throughout the service
- How to build quickly!
